Wir haben das Gefühl, dass Sie eine militante Aura haben, glauben Sie, dass sie von Ihrem Vater kommt?
P: Ja, mein Vater ist ein harter Mann, das erste Mal, als er mir sagte, ich liebe dich, war dieses Jahr. Meine Beziehung zu ihm sollte ihm immer beweisen, dass ich würdig war. Vor letztem Jahr hatten wir 5 Jahre lang nicht gesprochen, nur um euch wissen zu lassen, wie hart er ist. Ich habe das Gefühl, dass ich letztes Jahr stolz von ihm war.
Ich spreche darüber. Ich mache immer noch die kommerziellen Sachen, aber ich habe das Gefühl, dass die Leute die echten Dinge hören müssen. Ich habe es schon in meinen Liedern erwähnt, dass wir nie gesprochen haben und ich habe oft nicht das Gefühl, dass die Leute darüber sprechen oder so etwas in nigerianischer Musik sagen. Meine Eltern wollten nicht, dass ich Musik höre, aber ich musste ihnen beweisen, dass ich es wert war, indem ich zu Gott betete und arbeitete.
Genau wie in einem deiner Songs 'Deh Go Hear Weh' ist es die Ideologie, die du über mich hören wirst.
P: Ja, das ist die Idee, im Grunde das ganze Land. Du siehst meinen Bruder hier - zeigt auf seinen Manager - er ist ein Mogul, ein sauberer digitaler, musikalischer Mogul. Aber wenn er so gekleidet nach Nigeria kommt, werden sie sagen, was macht dieser Typ, betrügt er? Denn in Nigeria kennen sie nur Ärzte/Anwälte.
Dafür kämpfe ich, in Nigeria respektieren sie nicht wirklich das Handwerk, wohin die Musik einen führen kann. Ich habe ihm neulich gesagt, dass sie nur Ärzte und Anwälte für schlau halten, ich bin verdammt schlau.
Nächste Frage, woher kommt der Name hübscher Junge?
P: DO sind meine Initialen, hübscher Junge kommt von meiner Mutter und meiner Schwester, da sie mich früher so nannten und ich auch ein großer Rocky-Fan war und er es auch oft benutzte.
Welche Eigenschaften würden Sie sich bei einer Partnerin wünschen?
P: Loyalität… sie muss nur für etwas mahlen, was auch immer es ist, sie muss dafür Leidenschaft haben.

Wenn Sie an Afrobeats denken, sind nigerianische Künstler wahrscheinlich das Bild davon, wohin Sie Ihre Gedanken führen, von denen wir wissen, dass sie viele mächtige und einflussreiche Namen haben. Wegweisende Persönlichkeit Prettyboy DO ist eine, die in der aktuellen Liste einflussreicher Künstler aus dem Kraftpaket der afrikanischen Musik nicht fehlen darf. Dieser in New Jersey geborene bahnbrechende Künstler bietet einen federnden und lebendigen Klang, der Sie nicht still sitzen lässt. Diese Sounds passen nahtlos zu seinem exzentrischen Stil, von seiner Performance von 'Jungle Justice' auf COLORS und anderen extrem erfolgreichen Singles wie 'Same Energy' und 'Chop Elbow' kann man die Reflexion dieser Kreativität deutlich erkennen. Wenn er seine Reise fortsetzt, scheint es, als hätte der Sänger/Rapper das klare Ziel, der Größte zu sein und die Menschen auf seinem Weg zu inspirieren und seinen eigenen Weg zu ebnen.

„ Musik hat mich zu einem Mann gemacht. Ich war schon immer in Musik verliebt, schon als Kind, aber mehr noch mehr in die modische Seite der Musik. Biggie, Mase, Tupac… “
NW: You started off in photography, why do you think that was the first pillar you were drawn to?
RM: The first thing I did was styling, but as time went on I realised I was more interested in photo and capturing those moments and emotions than I was in putting the clothes together.
NW: Did you have to change any habits from working with photo and then transitioning to video?
RM: I think with video I just need to think more in motion or in movement as opposed to thinking in still because when you get used to thinking in still everything is a moment. Whereas in motion you can’t just have people standing about all the time you have to think about the movement. This led to dance-related stuff, I’ve always been interested in dance so a lot of the videos I’ve done have incorporated dance movement. I think using that in my video was kind of like a safety to me because I didn’t really have to think too much on what the video would be.
NW: Let’s talk about Hard Ears, your photography book released back in 2016, meaning ‘if you don’t hear, you will feel’, how did that fit into your life growing up?
RM: She would say it all the time growing up if we didn’t listen ha-ha. I guess I wanted to use it because through doing it [Hard Ears] I was going my own way instead of following that editorial route. I think Hard Ears will have a comeback though, maybe not in the same format but as something in my life.
That was curated in 2016, back then I was at the beginning and trying to find a space for myself, I guess it is the same thing I'm doing with this space [HOME] just a different medium. I've grown so much and learnt so much that now I look at it and think ‘this is awful’…
NW: No, really?
RM: Yes, awful. I think that's natural though like outsiders can see it with fresh eyes whereas I can only ever see the mistakes. I value it and appreciate it because I invested in myself and the things, I think are important. But what it is, the next one, whatever it will be, I know where it will be if that makes sense. I don’t think I’m interested in publishing in that format anymore, so we will see how it makes a comeback.

NW: You said it came out of the frustration towards commercial and editorial industries, looking back at that now, have you seen a shift in focus in those spaces?
RM: Not really, it’s the same thing. Of course, there are more people of colour doing things, but there are still gatekeepers and we now have gatekeepers of colour which is, of course, better but still the same thing. A lot of people still get excluded, it has changed for the positive, but I don’t think the format has changed making it still the same. The power shift hasn’t really happened, and all those big titles and big publications still have the power. Until people are ok with doing other things then they will maintain that.
Of course, things have changed, the things I used to look at before I started have changed but for me is not enough.
NW: What more do you think can be done to illuminate those creatives?
RM: Going to those spaces, buying into those brands, in 10 years from now we will be the big thing but only if we support each other in growing it. I think what we need to do as a community of people of colour is really back and support each other. And also collaborating more, bringing our spaces together, and creating more of a generational power, I think it's more exciting that way.

Es war irgendwie bestimmt, es war ein Prozess, aber Sie wissen nicht, was der Prozess war.
P: Ja, Sie wissen nicht, was Sie auf dem Weg finden würden, Leute zu treffen. Das Ding wird größer. Es ist Gott. Es ist Gott und Arbeit.
Welche anderen kreativen Dinge machst du außerhalb der Musik?
P: Film, ich führe bei vielen meiner Musikvideos Regie. Ich werde wahrscheinlich zum Film gehen, je nachdem, wie ehrgeizig und bereit ich bin, dorthin zu gehen. Ich möchte jetzt wirklich anfangen.
Hast du eine Stylistin? Wenn nicht, woher kommt es?
P: Ich bin einfach auf Instagram, speichere Dinge und vermische sie dann einfach.
Eines unserer Lieblingsprojekte von Ihnen ist Ihr Projekt von 2018, was waren Ihre Lieblingsmomente, die das verursacht haben?
P: Als ich nach Lagos zurückkam, war ich nach Birmingham und LA gegangen, und damals beschloss ich, ein Projekt aufzugeben. Dann hatte ich ein Gespräch mit meinem Cousin, der mir sagte: "Du musst ein Projekt fallen lassen, etwas fallen lassen und deinen Sound kennen, als würden deine Singles knallen, du bist dope, musst aber deinen Sound kennen". Also bumm, als er einmal sagte, dass ich cool wäre, lass uns gehen, lass uns das knallen. Ich hatte eine Menge Musik, die ich bereits aufgenommen hatte, und bin nach London gekommen, um 2 Songs aufzunehmen. Geh nach Lagos, fang an mit meinen Jungs, Hugo, aufzunehmen, und dann haben wir 2 in der Tasche. Jetzt können wir eine Show haben….einer nervt mich, ich hasse Industriepolitik, wenn wir hart arbeiten, kannst du hart arbeiten, lass uns diese Gelegenheit nutzen. Ich gehe für eine Showindustrie n****s tryna f**K mit mir ich bin höllisch angepisst. Aber nach der Show bin ich genervt, dass ich in sein Studio gehe und ihm sage, dass er mir etwas vorspielen soll, und dieser Beat hat mich am glücklichsten gemacht. Hochziehen

Even though they are different industries, you can distinctively tell that they are all by Ronan Mckenzie. From the colour scheme, design, and even the titles of your work. The name Selasi, why did you want that title?
I think for me it was more of the God in Selasi is not a religious God but more about hearing myself, trusting myself, and following my intuition. When I decided that I wanted to create a brand, I wanted to be really intentional about the connotations. And the connotations of my name are, that my first name is Irish, my second name is Scottish, and Mckenzie comes directly from plantations. So, when people realise, I’m not a white guy, it is directly from slavery. I wanted to put something out there that of course acknowledges my history but something that is stronger and something that stands on its own grounds, and something that you don’t think white you think black straight away, that was really important to me.
Now that the brand is out there, and has something that is for yourself and its connotations, has it provided that fulfilment?
Definitely, and it’s like a place where I can constantly play, there is no pressure I can really do what I want. I am guarded about who I let into it, and where it’s seen who borrows it, I can take my time. Like photography is my career so I have to do strategic moves, whereas with Selasi I get to do with it what I want. And also, it provides so many more opportunities to collaborate, I’ve worked with knitwear designers, and my friends and I make pieces for myself. but for my next collection, I am doing some products so it comes away from garments and I can create a world. With a photo, the engagement can only be someone looking at it but with garments, you can create a whole experience that brings it somewhere else. It makes you feel a certain way, it is part of how we hold ourselves and how people read us, there is so much more to it.
There are so many different mediums because they all come from the same place but there are definitely levels to where I can take each one.

Warum ist es für die neuen Musiker, die aus Nigeria kommen, wichtig, in Verbindung zu bleiben und oft zusammenzuarbeiten.
P: Wichtig für uns, Geld zu verdienen, Nummer eins. Wir kommen zur gleichen Zeit, und das bringt uns zusammen. Wir haben die gleiche Mission, Menschen mit afrikanischer Musik zu verbinden, ihnen zu zeigen, dass dies eine neue Zeit in unserem Land ist, wir uns alle gegenseitig unterstützen und das inspiriert sich gegenseitig und auch andere Künstler.
Viele von euch bekommen gerade ihren Glanz, aber einige Leute, die sich darin verlieren könnten, sind die Produzenten. Mit welchen Produzenten arbeiten Sie oft zusammen?
P: Higo, DARE, Adey... Viele der Produzenten, mit denen ich zusammenarbeite, habe ich bei meinem Come-Up getroffen, und es stimmt, was sie über Produzenten sagen, die verloren gehen oder zurückgelassen werden, aber für diese Generation von Produzenten kämpfen sie sie haben recht... sie sind alle so doof und ich glaube, ihr name und ihre marken werden sich weltweit verbreiten. Wenn ich wachse, werden meine Leute mit mir wachsen.
Ein weiteres Element von dir sind deine Visuals, und du sagst, du kennst deine Filme. Erzählen Sie uns von Leuten wie TSE und warum Sie gerne mit ihm arbeiten.
P: Ich habe mit ihnen angefangen und sie verstehen meine Vision, nicht nur die Bilder und Visuals, sondern alles, wie alles aussieht und sich anfühlt… Ich bin ein Kämpfer für die Künste in unserem Land, und meine Leute, das visuelle Team, die Produzenten haben alle dieser ähnliche Geist, um auch dafür zu kämpfen.
Jemand, der uns nahe steht, ist Chuka Nwobi, und er arbeitet auch mit dir, wie ist es, mit ihm zu arbeiten?
Er ist mein Bruder, einer der leidenschaftlichsten Künstler, einer der leidenschaftlichsten Menschen, die ich kenne. Er ist einer der Jüngsten, aber selbst dann rede ich noch mit ihm. Wir haben an vielen Projekten zusammengearbeitet, er war sehr maßgeblich am 'Dey Go Hear Weh'-Video beteiligt.
Du bist ein sehr ausdrucksstarker Typ, wie oft wechselst du deine Haarfarbe?
P: Jeden Monat
Du hast darüber gesprochen, Musik zu machen, um politische Themen anzusprechen usw. Was sind einige soziale Dinge, die dir am wichtigsten sind?
Gleichberechtigung, alles soll gleich sein. Kein Klassismus, Tribalismus, Rassismus – keine Ismen. Chancengleichheit für alle ist für mich das Wichtigste.
You’ve been in this industry for 10 years now, how have you seen your career, and that selective nature grow in that decade?
It is something I have learnt, it started with shoots. I would work with stylists or a set designer and I’d get the pictures back I wouldn’t feel that it did what I intended it to do. After a while, those creatives refined and I was exposed to more people that could also refine that, which is a natural process. But also, it is also a process that happens in an industry that is rapid and quite cut-throat, for me instead of leaning into that and doing what I need to do to be an ‘it person’, it pushed me away and made me want to be in a safe space with people I love and care about. Sometimes I do feel on the sideline because of that, but on the sideline, I can really focus on what I want to do. It has an impact on my career not chasing covers and those things, but now I am doing things that I wouldn’t have been able to do at this time, I’ve taken risks and spent money but I know I want to create longevity in my work and if worse comes to worst I can always go back to mums.
Is mum okay with that?
You know, she’ll have to be cool with it! but it won’t ever happen, I take comfort in the fact that I’m willing to get there if it means I’ve tried my absolute hardest to do what I need to do, put myself on the line and I’ve really lived my life. that isn’t always the easiest road, but it is the road I need to take. I always need support and help to keep everything together; I’ve expanded my team which has been amazing sharing the process. It is scary because sometimes I don’t know how I will pay people at the end of the month, but it was necessary you can’t do it all alone.

Wir sehen, dass Sie eine sehr lange Karriere haben und eine neue Gruppe von Künstlern führen. Wo sehen Sie sich und Ihr Handwerk in den nächsten 10 bis 15 Jahren?
P: Wo möchte ich in 10 Jahren sein… Verdammt, ich werde alt . Wenn ich es nicht bin, werde ich einen Künstler haben, aber immer noch einer der Großen sein, die es je gemacht haben. Ich werde wahrscheinlich in 10 Jahren Filme machen. Vielleicht versuche ich in meinem Kopf, einen Oscar zu bekommen. Ich sehe mich inzwischen als Titan, ein bekannter Name - es wird nicht einmal mein Künstlername sein, es wird mein richtiger Name sein.
Erstaunlich, hoffentlich Generationenfilme zu machen, die auf der ganzen Welt in Erinnerung bleiben?
P: Ja, nur um ein Titan in der Unterhaltung zu sein. Ich sehe mich nicht als geschäftlich da draußen, aber ich werde meine Hände darin tauchen und ich weiß, dass ich ins Kino gehen werde. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt glaube ich nicht, dass ich im Rampenlicht stehen werde, aber meine Filme werden es sein.
Do you feel like you’ve done what you’ve set out to do and do you self-reflect?
I do feel like I have done that, I am trying to self-reflect more and celebrate more which was my resolution this year. but if you asked me a year ago I would’ve been too busy or too stressed to have that, so I am proud of myself. I think at this point I need to help myself as much as I help others otherwise it wouldn’t work.
What is your legacy?
For me when I leave this world, I want to fulfil the peace that I’ve enjoyed in my life. so hopefully through that, those who have also enjoyed me and my work can hold that in high regard.
